Bennett Does The Business for Lee On The Solent Golf Club

Last week our very own member Jane Bennett took part in the prestigious Simone Thion de la Chaume Trophy. This event was created in 1999 by Catherine Lacoste, in memory of her mother Simone Thion de la Chaume. The event is the first Open Senior Women’s event in the world and would remain so until 2010, the only one in Europe.

In 2006, one hundred participants under 18 handicap come from all over Europe. In 2007, thanks to a new organization, more sponsors , and the presence of several well-known players, the Trophy escalated : the number of professional players doubles and the level becomes more and more competitive : 85% of the players are under 10 handicap even if the limit is still 14.4.

In 10 years the number of participants increased from 35 to 120 players : well-known senior professional players from the American, European and Japanese circuits are present, as well as top female senior amateurs in Europe, British, Belgian, Swedish, Swiss, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, and American champions, a total of 12 nationalities represented.

In 2014, to allow the largest number of senior players to participate in this week of golf, the organization decided to open a second competition with a higher handicap limit, while maintaining the friendly and sportsmanship spirit of the trophy.
Players which do not enter the Trophy can participate in the STC Cup (60 players maximum). The winner of the STC Cup will get a wild card for the following year’s edition of the Simone Thion de la Chaume Trophy. It is this Cup that Jane took part in.
Jane went on to beat a field of competitors over 3 rounds winning the competition off scratch and handicap. I cannot find the words to show how proud I am off Jane for not only for personal reasons but also for putting Lee on the map.

I hope you will all join me in congratulating Jane on her success.
