The storm of 1987 created an ideal location for Westerham Golf Course from mature woodland.  With stunning views over the undulating Kent North Downs, Westerham is easy to reach from the M25, being located between junctions 5 and 6 on the A25, just half a mile east of Westerham village.

Tree lined fairways, strategically placed bunkers and three beautiful water features makes this course a solid test for any standard of golfer.

Westerham Golf Course was opened in May 1997 and encompasses established forestry producing the impression of a course mature beyond it years. The 6,270 yards, par 72 course has been built to a very high standard and benefits from a continuous maintenance and improvement programme, ensuring it stays in outstanding condition, with USGA specification greens and irrigation installed throughout, which allows greens to be played 12 months of the year.

With its exceptional design and maturity it has gained its reputation as a ‘thinking man’s course’. Lasting memories of the course will more than likely revolve around the ‘eye of the storm’ par 3 11th – a hole where not a single tree had to be felled; a long iron with daunting pine trees and bunkers protecting a small green certainly makes it a hole not for the faint of heart.

With its closing hole bringing you back to a grandstand finish in front of the Clubhouse where the pressure is on to clear the devilishly positioned 18th lake, any golfer cannot help but get that tingling feeling in their stomach; it certainly provides a fitting and exhilarating end to an exceptional golf course!

Latest Developments at Westerham Golf Club

The latest development at Westerham is a new 9 hole (par 3) golf course, which will be opening for use during Summer 2016.

Started in 2009, the project has been a lengthy one involving the Environment Agency, Kent County Council and Sevenoaks District Council, with planning approval finally obtained in late 2011.

Designed with beginners in mind, the new ‘Churchill 9’ Par 3 course will be the focus for Altonwood’s tuition centre, providing a first class venue at which juniors and adults alike can learn and develop their skills before progressing to a full-size course.

Located on the site of the old Brasted Sand Pits extraction site, left unattended for several years, development involved not only the restoration of the site but, since the site had developed plant species and invertebrates of ecological importance, strict mainentance of these species had to be undertaken, as imposed by the Planners. These are detailed as ‘Open Mosaic’ areas (usually termed as ‘rough’ on golf courses) and only add to the interest and difficulty of the course; largely left to grow wild, we recommend a drop out to the adjacent fairway rather than an attempt to play out!

The lake between the 7th and 8th holes adds a further degree of difficulty, but golfers should note that it is deep and players should not, under any circumstances, enter the water in an attempt to retrieve golf balls.

Together with Westerham’s already extensive short game practice area, driving range and indoor tuition centre, the Churchill 9 provides the ultimate facility for beginners to build their confidence and hone their skills on the course.

Involving Altonwood’s team of PGA Qualified Professionals alongside major golf organisations, including England Golf, an extensive tuition programme has been developed to target new golfers and encourage people to take up Golf – particularly Juniors and Ladies – including a detailed programme for schools, which meets the needs of the National Curriculum.

It’s an exciting time for The Altonwood Group who’s late Chairman, Ron Noades’ mission, was to make golf ‘available to all’.
