The Addington Golf Club

Currently ranked at 30 in Golf World’s Top 100 Courses England, there is no doubt that The Addington is the flagship venue of The Altonwood Group’s portfolio.

With a rich and interesting history, The Addington was designed by JF Abercromby in 1913 and first opened for play in 1919.  It soon became a favourite of the rich and famous, reaching its heyday in the 1930s, when it was written about by many famous writers of the time and played host to filmstars, golfing legends and even royalty – King George VI became Patron in 1937!

Move on 70 years and the course, whilst virtually unchanged in layout, presented a very different outlook, requiring major essential works both on and off the course.

Undeterred, The Altonwood’s Chairman, Ron Noades, secured the purchase of The Addington in 2006 and so began a lengthy refurbishment project!

With five clubs in the South East, the Group has an ‘ongoing improvement policy’ from which The Addington has greatly benefitted; improvements have taken place continuously over the last 10 years, totalling in excess of £250,000 this winter alone.

In addition to the rebuilding of nine tees, six greens have been fitted with a new passive capillary drainage system, under the supervision of leading agronomist Cameron MacMillan, whilst the woodland management programme has exposed some of the magnificent pine trees that are a feature of the course.
