Basingstoke Golf Club
Basingstoke is a Private Members Club with over 700 members and celebrated its centenary year in 2007.
Basingstoke Golf Club is a mature tree-lined parkland course in rolling countryside that has matured well over the years into one of the finest courses in the region.
After months of preparatory work, Basingstoke Golf Club was established on the 6th December 1907. The original 9-hole course had been set up on land just north of Basingstoke station by Charles Lloyd, the clubs first professional.
From these humble beginnings the club thrived until the Great War where it was taken over and used as a training airfield. Whilst this land was never used again as a playable golf course the club members continued to meet and play other clubs under the name of Basingstoke Golf Club until finally, in 1926, they started to look for a new site to build a course.
Kempshott Park was the chosen land and James Braid was commissioned to design and construct the course. After receiving favourable reports from Mr Braid, the 106 acres of land was purchased and work commenced and it officially opened by James Braid, Harry Vardon and Miss Molly Gourlay on a cold, wet and windy March day.
The course measures 6,307 yards, with a par of 70, and is synonymous of a James Braid design with undulating fairways, subtle contoured greens and strategic bunkering.
Playing host to many county amateur and professional events, the course and greens in particular are regarded as some of the finest in the south.
There are many classic Braid trade-mark holes including a driveable ‘risk or reward’ par 4 but our signature hole is the par four 14th, which calls for two accurate shots to reach the green in regulation and marks the end of a five-hole stretch which we call our own “Amen Corner”!
It has a reputation for being a fun course to play for all standards of golfers off the forward tees and so lends itself well as a golf day venue, while it can also be stretched out to a tougher test off the back tees.
The course provides a challenging examination of your golf skills, yet is fair and playable for golfers of all abilities. The greens staff present the course to a high standard throughout the year for both members and visitors to enjoy.
But don’t just take our word for it. Search the internet for reviews of our course from unbiased yet demanding golfers and you will find – consistently – that we come highly recommended from the people that matter.
The present Clubhouse was opened in 1998 and offers a relaxed, modern atmosphere in tune with the needs of all visitors to the club. The staff offer a warm welcome and our catering operation is regarded as one of the best in the region. When you next visit make sure you take time to sample the Clubhouse – you will not be disappointed.
