Do not put your clubs away!
I get it, you wake up early on a Saturday morning to a wind-chill forecast of -10, it’s drizzling and the prospect of a social non-qualifier is only making the option to crawl back under the duvet all the more attractive. But what else are you going to do? Go shopping (or worse Christmas shopping!) or tidy the house…no self-respecting golfer spends a Saturday doing chores!
Winter is the time to get rid of that snap-hook you’ve managed to hone all summer, or treat yourself to the new £500 driver that promises those crucial extra yards. If not for yourself, do it to help your golf club, because, in the winter months, your golf club really needs you.
We’re unbelievably lucky at Tadmarton to be able to own a sand-based, links-like heathland that drains like a sieve, making the whole course perfectly playable all year round with next to no disruption. But that doesn’t mean we don’t need to go the extra mile to tempt golfers out into the North Oxfordshire countryside on the cold, murky mornings.
This year we are trialling our own Winter Series event, 4 singles Stableford competitions each with a first prize of £300 that will culminate in an Order of Merit for the same amount. We can host qualifiers in winter so have the ability to host some hotly contested Opens at a time where little competitive golf is available. We are also able welcome visitors and societies all year round looking for a full round and some of our special warming, winter-friendly catering that can easily be the highlight after a tough day on the links!
Despite our luck in our ability to host excellent winter golfing conditions we, like every other club, feel the pinch in the cold, quiet winter months. So whether you’re the loyalest of members or have a preference for a new course every game, do not throw the clubs to the back of your garage this winter, because we all need you and the buzz that golfers bring.
So wrap up, hone that new swing, trial the latest crazy technology and make use of those awful Christmas stocking fillers!
