Inter Counties League

24th May at Cuddington Golf Club (Surrey)

Surrey’s Under 14 team continued the unbeaten season of all Surrey junior teams – across all age groups – by winning the tri counties match against Essex and Kent last Sunday at Cuddington Golf Club. The results of previous matches at the end of this report.

For the second round of the league matches it was Surrey to host and what better place than the beautiful Cuddington golf club, who also kindly hosted the match the previous year.

The format for this competition is 12 a side, triple singles match play off scratch, although the players go out in handicap order. The winner of the group then goes onto play the winner of the other group to determine the Champions. In the first round at Broke Hill in Kent Surrey beat both Essex and Kent and Kent beat Essex.

The weather was reasonable for a Sunday afternoon in May, although we did get a small amount of rain towards the end of the match. With all the lads from Surrey, Kent and Essex keen to get going the match started with the playing reserves going out first, unfortunately the Essex reserve had to pull out at the last minute, but Surrey’s Xavier Schwarz played against the Kent reserve, comfortably winning this none scoring match 5&3.

Surreys captain Enrique Dimayuga lead the boys off and very soon found himself in a titanic battle, after the front nine he was 2 down to Essex and all square with Kent. But with the usual never say die Surrey attitude he managed a hard earned half in both games.

This confirmed what had been said at the team meeting, that despite the Surrey lads beating both the other Counties fairly convincingly in the first match at Broke Hill this was a new day. And like Surrey the other Counties had some different players in the team for this match so they would have to treat it as if they had never played the other Counties before and work hard and focus to gain another victory. And work hard they did!

As per the previous match at Broke Hill several of the Surrey players won their matches in a somewhat convincing manner. John Richardson, Ben Partridge, Ollie Kail, Egor Zotov, Babar Haq and Jamie Bark all won both their matches gaining maximum points for the team.

Of the other players Abdus-samad Banday, Jason Denham, Daniel Stafford, and Joshua Balson-Scales all won points for the team score. Only one player lost both matches but Lewis Brown still aided the team with his support of the other players before, during and after the matches. Which shows the fantastic team spirit we have within this squad of players.

All the matches were played in a great spirit with excellent etiquette from all the players of the three Counties. After play there was a lovely two course meal and the usual speeches by the Captains, then everyone headed home.

The finals scores from today were Surrey beat Kent 19pts to 5pts, Surrey beat Essex 17pts to 7pts and Essex beat Kent 15pts to 9pts.
The league positions after two rounds are; Surrey 8pts, Kent 2pts, Essex 2pts.

The next round is being hosted by Essex on Sunday 7th June at South Essex Golf Club.
