The latest ‘major’ in Ross Golf Club’s extensive summer events programme for its men members  was the Annual Gordon Blake Cup/County Cup medal qualifier and was supported by a massive 129 members entry. For 13 handicapper Nigel Yates it provided the perfect opportunity for  him to complete his most accomplished 18 holes golfing performance since he joined the Ross Club in 2009. It was excellent timing as well in that Nigel was able to continue the good form shown of late to get off to a flying start with 2 birdies in his opening 9 holes to reach the turn in just 1 over gross par. Keeping clear of problems from thereafter enabled Nigel to sign for a highly impressive gross 78, nett 65 medal score to gain some honours board recognition and which came with a 2 shots handicap reduction as well.

The runner-up, 15 handicapper Peter Smith also performed heroically on the day in being 1 under gross par after 10 holes although ultimately his gross 82, nett 67 score just fell short of the top spot despite earning Peter a 2 shots handicap reduction too. With 12 of the top 14 players being involved with handicap reductions the overall standard of play was highly praiseworthy and those to be commended included Richard Moore, nett 68, Shaun Sturge and James Porter with nett 69’s and a host of nett 70’s represented by Martin Pimlow, Shaun Reynolds, Peter Bennett, Club President Doug Duncanson, Derek Hancock, Mick Merrick and Chris Kenny. Alexander Harris and Seniors Vice Captain David Price both carded nett 71’s’

The Ross Club’s Mens’ ‘A’ team competing in the North Glos Foursomes Division 2 and in the care of team Captain, Neil Lancett were also in fine fettle when their latest encounter at Naunton Downs Golf Club saw them return home with a highly satisfying 6-0 win thanks to James Dobbs/James Morgan 3/1, Jason Bolton/Tim Wyatt 3/2, Arthur Cartwright/Simon Mills 5/3, Dave Daniels/Robin Eckley 7/6, Simon Sharpe/Alastair Watkins 3/1 and Warren Moore/Steve Wallbank 7/5.
