A hole in one in the final round of the annual junior
championships at Woodcote Park Golf Club was a
highlight of an excellent and extremely competitive
event.
George Bell, playing off a handicap of 18, aced
the par three thirteenth hole from 186 yards
in his second and final round and went on
to win the handicap title. He was just pipped
to the gross title by Dan Fitzgerald.
The shot was witnessed by George's younger
brother Cameron and other junior members from the fourteenth tee, along with Course Marshall, Bob Lamb, who was out to check on the juniors' progress during atrociously wet conditions. Bob said "it was a tremendous shot, which never left the flag. It took one bounce on the green and went into the hole".
George, 16, a pupil at Ewell Castle School had received his GCSE results just a day earlier and was delighted with the achievement which was only the third hole in one achieved in competition play at the club this year. George's father and current Club Captain, Ian Bell said "George has had a fantastic week, his GCSE results were great and this achievement under competition pressure, and in those conditions, is something that he can talk about for the rest of his life. Some golfers play for years and never make a hole in one".
