Williams wins Fairhurst Cup

At the weekend, over 130 golfers took part in Newbury & Crookham’s net Club Championships, the 36 hole Fairhurst Cup, with Tom Williams emerging as the winner.

After a very competitive first day with lots of good scores in the mid to high 60’s, scoring was much harder on Sunday with just 3 scores under 70. One of these was Toms’s superb net 62, enough to win the overall title by two shots from Mark Bradford, with Nigel Thorne a further two shots back in third.

Ladies & Mixed

The Ladies Spring Meeting was a great success with the Lady Captain Liz Draper winning the Silver Division with 36 points on count back from Carol Thorogood.

Bronze Division winner was Laura Hawkins with 35 points from Marjorie Herring and Gill Myers on 34 points. Nearest the pins were won by Liz Draper, Gill Darby and Teresa Talmage. The nine hole Bowmaker took place in the afternoon with the team of Jenny Bell  Diana Davis  Gill Darby Anne Kingston taking first place.

Over the winter months the ladies play for the Winter Eclectic cup Mary Wyatt was the overall winner with Jo Grieve coming a very close second.

Shey Walder took the Boake Cup in a playoff with Marjorie Herring.

Sylvia Davis won the Win Moore Trophy with 37pts one shot better than Olive Hill.

The Priston Cup playoff was won by Mary Wyatt from Sylvia Davis.

Other News

Newbury & Crookham member David Niven, finished tied fourth in the English Seniors last week. It was held at Hexham and Matfen Hall in Northumberland adjacent to Hadrians Wall, and in a rain effected event, he led the qualifying round at Matfen with a 72 and despite leading with four holes to play at three under, Stephen East from Moor Town birdied the last three holes to finish at five under to win, with David finishing on one under and tied fourth.

Linda Hunt has qualified to play in the Grand Final of the Midlands South Regional Medal Final at Tadmarton Heath with a 79 gross net 76.

Junior member Simon Mead played in a “Wee Wonders” qualifying event at Redbourn GC recently and was runner up in the boys 7-8 category and has therefore qualified for the grand final at St Andrew’s in August.
