Matt Wallace Junior Clinic

Matt Wallace Junior Clinic

On Sunday 8th April, First Degree Golf Academy and Moor Park Golf Club organised a very special event for the Junior Members and Junior Academy golfers at the Club. European Tour star and Honorary Member, Matt Wallace, gave a live clinic and participated in a Q & A to the young golfers and parents.

Born locally in Pinner, Matt played much of his junior and amateur golf in the surrounding area. He has enjoyed tremendous success over recent years winning in five consecutive starts on The Alps Tour, and six over the course of the year in 2016. In the same year, Matt then featured on the European Tour, making his debut at the Nordea Masters, and finished fourth at the Terre dei Consoli Open on the Challenge Tour. Matt’s performances on the Alps Tour secured him a Challenge Tour card and he won the Open de Portugal, co-sanctioned with the European Tour, in only his fourth start in 2017. Most recently, Matt won the Indian Open, beating Andrew Johnston in a play-off to secure his second European Tour title.

The recent Club event was attended by 50 Juniors plus parents. In front of the audience and despite the poor weather, Matt hit a number of shots, discussed his game and explained how he prepares for tournaments. He also gave an insight into his journey to reach a career high of number 94 in the world and a two time winner on the European Tour. Matt also participated in a Q & A and took questions from the audience.

Parent, and member of Moor Park, Raj Saigal commented “Matt’s words gave my son Rio a motivational boost! The event was very much enjoyed by all of us but especially the kids! What a great golf club to be a member of!”

Parent, Jo Martin, whose daughter is a Junior Member of the Golf Club exclaimed “What a great guy! He came across so well, was so generous with his time, was relaxed, approachable and interesting. My daughter found it inspiring and said, as we drove home, ‘It really makes me want to do it’. Inspiring juniors to play to the highest level they can is a fantastic gift to give.”

Matt was delighted after the event, stating “What a brilliant day! I hope all the Juniors and parents enjoyed the event. Despite the weather, it was great turn out. It is great to spend some time with the Juniors at my home club and see so many enthusiastic young golfers! I hope to see a few of them on the European Tour in a few years time”.

First Degree Golf Academy Professional, Robert Warburton, explained “The idea of this event was to give our Junior Members and Academy Juniors a unique chance to get up close with a golfer at the elite level of the game. The event provided these juniors and their parents, many with aspirations to reach this level, with a personal perspective of the journey and dedication required. Matt gave a fantastic insight into his career and current practices. You could see how inspired each junior was during and after the event. Matt is a fantastic role model to these Juniors and was so generous with giving time out of his schedule. We hope that the event will inspire these juniors to achieve great things in anything they choose with hard work, self belief and dedication!”
