MALLORCA TOURNAMENT OFFERS WINTER SUNSHINE GOLF
Winter sunshine golf on the island’s top two courses is on offer as one of Mallorca’s best hotel’s hosts a unique amateur tournament in November.
The third annual Lindner Mallorca Golf Trophy takes place from November 26-29 and includes golf at both Son Gual and Club de Golf Alcanada – by common consent the island’s best courses – and three nights’ B&B at the four-star Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort Portals Nous.
The entry fee for the tournament also includes use of a trolley on both days, two dinners at the hotel, a gala ceremony at Alcanada’s clubhouse – which includes beverages – and transport to and from the golf courses to the hotel. The event itself is an individual Stableford event, open to all amateur golfers.
It offers the opportunity to experience Mallorcan golf at its best in a competitive environment. Both courses are award-winning venues and both are members of the Leading Golf Courses in Spain group.
The €30m Thomas Himmel-designed Son Gual course was acclaimed recently as ‘best golf course’ by the World of Leading Golf, a corporation representing some of the globe’s most distinctive clubs. And it has been turning heads since it opened in 2007.
It is listed as the eighth-best course in Spain and the top venue in Mallorca in Golf World‘s benchmark Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe 2014 rankings. Golf World described the venue as “one of the finest inland courses on the continent”, and continued: “Son Gual is what a modern championship course should be, and, taken together with its fabulous clubhouse and practice facilities, is every inch a serious Tour venue … it stands comparison with our own high-octane parklands The Grove and The Belfry – not least in the conditioning stakes, which is no mean achievement.”
It includes several outstanding, memorable holes including a closing hole described by one reviewer as a “serious contender for Europe’s best par-five and Spain’s most dramatic 18th”.
Alcanada’s 7,108-yard, Trent Jones Jr-designed course has won a steady stream of awards since opening 12 years ago. It was recently voted runner-up in the ‘favourite course in Europe’ category of leading German magazine Golf Journal’s annual Golf Travel Awards, for the second successive year, having previously attained the number-one spot for an unprecedented five years in a row.
It was also awarded an ‘outstanding’ rating by Leadingcourses.com – the highest level awarded by the website – making it one of just 12 clubs in Spain to attain the level. And, last year, it was ranked the highest-rated course in the Balearics by Golfboo, the world’s first golf travel search engine, and shortlisted for the title of Spain’s Best Golf Course 2014, in the inaugural World Golf Awards. What’s more, it was also voted ‘favourite course’ in Europe for a fourth year in a row by visitors to www.1golf.eu.
Alcanada sits in a breathtaking location overlooking the Bay of Alcudia. Adjacent to the Mediterranean – the only course next the sea on the island – Alcanada, which opened in October 2003, blends naturally into the typical Mallorcan terrain and takes its name from an island with a lighthouse, situated just offshore, which can be seen from most of the holes.
The delightful African-influenced Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort Portals Nous – set amid Bendinat’s Royal Golf Course and close by the luxury yacht harbour of Puerto Portals – offers 118 comfortable rooms and suites, two exquisite restaurants, a cosy golf bar, spa area with indoor and outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, saunas, steam bath and gym, all set within spacious grounds with large sun lawns, and all less than a 20-minute drive from the airport.
And the first-class international and Mediterranean-style cuisine at the two restaurants will warm the cockles of even the most seasoned gourmet’s heart.
The Lindner Mallorca Golf Trophy 2015 runs from November 26-29, 2015, and costs from €619 per person (based upon two people sharing a room).
