Duff House Royal Golf Club is a beautifully manicured parkland course, a feature being the large two tiered “MacKenzie” greens. Its appearance defies its difficulty and its 6161 yards (S.S.S. 70) offers a severe but fair challenge to golfers of all abilities.

The basic design remains faithful to the principles of its designer Dr. Alister Mackenzie, who maintained that the ideal golf course should include –

• The greens and fairways undulating, without steep hills for the golfer to climb.

• A minimum of blind approach shots.
• The emphasis placed on natural beauty, not on artificial features.
• Always an alternative route for the weaker player, yet a sufficient test for the plus-handicap player (this feeling influenced course layouts when penal designs were king).
• A complete absence of the annoyance caused by searching for lost balls.
• Course conditioning must remain consistently outstanding.

The current Course record holder is local member David Morrison who on the 16th July 2005 while playing in the Junior Sweep completed the course in 61 strokes. The Ladies record is held by Vikki Laing from Musselburgh Golf Club, who completed the course in 67 strokes while competing in the 1998 Scottish Ladies Junior Open Stroke Play Championship.

Featured Holes

The 7th – Island
This difficult Par 4 is 460 yards long bounded all the way up the fairway by the river on the left. Two good shots are required and the green slopes from right to left and is uphill from front to back.

The 9th – Kirkside.

A beautiful 172 yards Par 3 with the river on the left and bunkered front left and to the right. With the pin hard right a medium to long iron is required and the ideal shot requires a fade to stop the ball on the green. A dangerous hole!

The 12th – Plateau.

Starting with a difficult drive which has to be drawn round the trees, this 498 yard par 5 features a superb view of Duff House from the fairway. Although there are no bunkers, the green is shaped sharply from right to left and it is virtually impossible to hold the ball on the green with a long approach shot from the right hand side of the fairway.

The 16th – Venus.

An excellent 242 yard Par 3 which has ruined many a good round. The green is well guarded by bunkers on the left and water to the right.

The 17th – Bridge.

A tough 462 yard Par 4 with out of bounds on both sides of the fairway up to the hole. Usually played into the prevailing wind and requires two good shots to reach in regulation.
