Cranleigh Warriors Blaze Through Golf Ultra-Marathon

Four teenage warriors from Cranleigh Golf & Country Club have successfully played their part in golf’s version of an ultra-marathon.
Junior captain Leo Wilson (15), Oliver Lamboll (14), James Carlisle (14) – all students at Glebelands School in Cranleigh – and Alex Cheeseman (16), who is set to attend Godalming College in September – clocked up a staggering 326 holes of golf between them in a gruelling golfing marathon to raise more than £2,000 for the Jigsaw Trust charity.
Wilson and Lamboll, who play off a handicap of 13 and 22 respectively, both played a remarkable 109 holes each – after even adding one extra bonus hole after completing six full rounds. The incredible journey started with them hitting their first tee shots at 5.50am and was finally over more than 14 hours later after holing their final putts at 8.10pm.
They were joined in their quest by 24-handicapper Carlisle, who completed 72 holes in his four rounds, while 22-handicapper Cheeseman defied injury to add 36 holes to the marathon team effort.
Junior organiser, Rita Elliott, said: “It was an inset day at school and I suggested they might like to give it a go. They all agreed and put in an amazing effort on the day.
“There was great support from people who came along to caddy for them in some of the rounds and acted as ball-spotters out on the course.
“I think they were all pretty exhausted by the end of it because it was such a hot day. But we all got together for a celebratory barbecue the following evening and they weren’t feeling the effects too badly. When you’re young, you don’t feel those aches and pains!
“It’s a great cause and we’re already thinking about another challenge next year – although I haven’t told them yet!”
The Surrey-based Jigsaw Trust provides educational, vocational and wellbeing services for children and adults with autism and has been adopted as the club’s chosen charity for 2018.
